My only suggestion is to be sure the version of this book matches the year of the version of Maya you are using, since Maya’s user interface and tools have had major changes, and the number and placement of menu items is very confusing to new users.
I also ordered the version of this book and it’s been an excellent reference for my Maya version. One person found this helpful. Written very well. The volume offers a lot of details useful for a first level of knowledge.
